How can a good posture change your life?
Posture is an integral part of our overall health. A good posture will help us feel better and make our lives easier, while bad posture can lead to health problems.
Posture is not only crucial for how we look but also for how we feel. Good posture gives us courage and energy, while lousy posture makes us anxious and tired.
We should not underestimate the importance of good posture. It is worth spending time on this habit of creating good posture, because it affects all aspects of our life, including self-confidence, self-esteem, moods and even attractiveness.
Back pain is one of the most common health problems that people experience. Self-reported data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) 2017–18 shows that about 4.0 million Australians (16% of the total population) have back problems. The leading cause of back pain is bad posture…
Although back pain can be caused by an underlying condition such as arthritis, spinal deformities, osteoporosis, or herniated discs, it is primarily a result of bad posture. The threat is even more prominent now that people spend more time sitting at desks while working from home via zoom.
The human body is made to move, and it needs exercise and activity to stay healthy and live longer. People who sit at a desk for hours on end deprive their bodies of the necessary movement they need.
We can prevent these health problems by ensuring that people have good postural alignment throughout the workday. It is essential to get up and move around for at least 10 minutes every hour to stay healthy and active.
Good posture can improve one's mood. When you stand up straight, you make your spine long, which has been shown to reduce anxiety and depression symptoms.
For a moment - Picture a woman gracefully balancing a large basket of food on her head. To carry such a heavy weight, she must have a perfectly aligned spine and strong posture-support muscles. You don’t get that kind of alignment and strength from sitting around and watching TV, or being chained to a desk all day.
You can, however, get it from a regular yoga practice.
To create great alignment for your body, I recommend a three-part strategy.
First, build awareness by assessing your posture and your lifestyle.
Next, create a yoga prescription for your specific postural problem by incorporating a few simple poses into your regular practice or if you don't have a regular practice, create one. (or try my 21-day yoga course)
Finally, take your newly developed awareness of your alignment issues and apply it throughout your daily life.
It's that simple.
The goal here isn't to achieve perfection; it's simply to find the healthiest alignment that makes you feel strong and at ease—given your body structure. This will take time, patience, perseverance, and a good teacher who focuses on alignment - Me.
Yoga trains your mind as well as your body. As you continue to devote yourself to your practice, you will become more present in your body and more aware of your alignment, and you will begin to naturally make choices that will improve your health and your quality of life.
