When I teach yoga I feel extremely focused.  As soon as I sit on my mat I am able to be very focused. Yet lots of times throughout my day I am not feeling focused.  I am a real ideas person and have lots of ideas throughout the day, the story I have been telling myself is I am an ideas person so its hard for me to focus.  I decided to do a bit more research in to this and this is what I came up with.

Focus - the state or quality of having or producing clear visual definition.

This is what the dictionary defines as focus.

According to one blog: Losing focus is actually natural and desirable - it's an evolutionary system meant to keep us safe. Breaking focus  on a task happens when your brain is noticing things that might need your attention. Evolution requires your concentration to break when something is either dangerous or rewarding. 

New research shows it takes one part of the brain to start concentrating and another to be distracted. This discovery could help scientists develop better treatments for attention deficit disorder.

Scientists knew that paying attention involved multiple brain regions but they did not know how, because studies until now have examined one region at a time.

Concentration, attention, focus, involve thought. Thought outwardly directs itself creatively when uncontrolled, and with 5 a minute break ideally the ability to focus and refocus attention, concentration, lasts at best 20-40 minutes.

Ahh makes sense.  Focus can only occur when we have said yes to one option and no to all other options.. As Tim Ferriss says, “What you don’t do determines what you can do.”

So I think making a list and I mean a realistic list, the night before of what you need to do or want to work on is key.  I like to put time limits next to the tasks so I don't spend all day on one task, eg: posting something on Facebook. 

I also like the idea of taking a break for 5 minutes every hour.  I also set a timer for 45 minutes and then have a 5 minute stretch.  If I don't do this, because I work from home, I find myself easily in the kitchen nibbling on something, or deciding to bake a cake, something crazy like that.

So for me staying focus, requires discipline as well as focus they go hand in hand.  Sticking to the tasks at hand.  After all whats better than ticking something of on your To do list - nothing!
